Karin Moggridge + Mike Nuttall : : "Knowing Bill Moggridge"
A conversation with two dear friends.
Karin Moggridge did not set out to be a textile designer.
The Danish-born artist went to England as a teenage au pair. While attending first year classes at Hornsey College of Art in London, Karin met Mike Nuttall and introduced him to Bill Moggridge. Bill became a world-renowned designer, one of our 2014 Medalists – and Karin’s husband of 47 years. Mike worked with Bill in the Moggridges’ first office, a tiny apartment in Hornsey, England. When Bill opened his industrial design office in Palo Alto, California. Karin worked as a furniture designer and made leather clothing for rock bands. Today, she designs and creates one-of-a-kind women’s clothing and fiber art, "Anything to do with textiles, be it for the body or the walls."
After Mike graduated from the Royal College of Art in London, Bill asked him to join his firm full time. Mike moved to Silicon Valley just as the skyrocketing growth began. Later, with Bill Moggridge and David Kelley, he co-founded IDEO.
Known for his signature simplicity and clean lines, Nuttall is a cutting-edge technology designer, creating designs for numerous high tech products including the original Microsoft mouse.
Mike's advice, “Develop your own point of view and personality around the thing you're interested in… Do something that allows your right brain to kick in.”
